New Holland L175 Oil Filter Change Confusion

Hey guys,

Trying to get my L175 maintenance fully sorted since I don’t really trust what the previous owner did.

I changed the new holland l175 oil filter and engine oil yesterday. Added what the manual says should be close to full capacity, ran it a bit, shut it down… and the dipstick shows way over.

I drained a small amount back out and now it looks better, but honestly I’m confused because the numbers don’t seem to match reality.

Anyone else run into this with these machines? Not sure if it’s normal or if something’s off with mine.

Yeah… welcome to L175 ownership :D
They’re super picky about how long you wait before checking the stick. If you check it right after shutdown it almost always looks high.

I’ve got one too. Mine reads different depending on how the loader is sitting. Slight slope = totally different reading. First time it happened I thought I blew a seal or something.

This comes up more than people think and it’s rarely an actual problem.

What happens is people assume the capacity number is exact, but that number is basically for a completely empty engine(Cooler lines drained, filter empty, everything dry. Real-world oil changes never drain 100%).

On these engines:

oil hides in the cooler

some stays in passages

and depending on the filter size you installed, volume changes slightly

I always fill under spec first, run it until oil pressure stabilizes, shut down, wait 10–15 min, then slowly bring it up to level.

Also worth mentioning, aftermarket filters can absolutely throw the reading off a bit. Not dangerous, just different.

Not saying this is your issue but… did you let it drain long enough?

I used to pull the plug, wait 5 minutes, close it and fill. Later found out if I left it 25–30 min I got almost another quart out. Makes a huge difference in where the level ends up.

Good point about the parking angle. I rechecked this morning on flat ground and it’s not nearly as high as yesterday.

Also yeah… aftermarket filter here. Sounds like I’m probably fine then.

Been wrenching on these for years, manuals are a starting point, not gospel.

Every engine ends up slightly different after a few hundred hours. Fill a little under full, watch pressure, and go work it. If it was truly overfilled you’d know pretty quick.
